Avocado BLT Grilled Cheese (Printable)

Crispy bacon, fresh lettuce and tomato, creamy avocado, and melted cheese between golden buttery bread.

# What You’ll Need:

→ Bread & Dairy

01 - 4 slices sourdough or country white bread
02 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
03 - 4 slices cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

→ Meats

04 - 4 slices thick-cut bacon

→ Vegetables

05 - 1 ripe avocado, sliced
06 - 1 medium tomato, sliced
07 - 2 leaves romaine or butter lettuce

→ Condiments & Seasoning

08 - Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

# Directions:

01 - Cook bacon slices in a skillet over medium heat until crispy, approximately 5-7 minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain excess grease.
02 - Lightly butter one side of each bread slice with softened butter.
03 - Place two bread slices buttered side down on a work surface. Layer each with cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado. Season avocado and tomato with salt and pepper. Top with remaining cheese slices and bread slices buttered side up.
04 - Heat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place assembled sandwiches in the skillet and cook until golden brown and cheese melts, approximately 3-4 minutes per side, gently pressing with a spatula.
05 - Remove sandwiches from skillet and cool for 1-2 minutes. Slice diagonally in half and serve immediately.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • It takes everything you love about a BLT and wraps it in melted cheese and crispy, golden bread that crunches with every bite.
  • The creamy avocado cools down the salty bacon in a way that feels like the ingredients were always meant to meet.
  • You can make it in twenty minutes with ingredients you probably already have, no special trips to the store required.
02 -
  • If your heat is too high the bread will burn before the cheese melts, so keep it at medium-low and be patient, the wait is worth it.
  • Pat your tomato slices dry with a paper towel before adding them or they'll release water and turn your bread soggy in the middle.
  • Build the sandwich with cheese on both the top and bottom layers so it acts like glue, holding everything together when you flip it.
03 -
  • Cook your bacon until it's just past crispy, because it will soften slightly once it's tucked into the hot sandwich and you still want that crunch.
  • Let your skillet preheat for a full minute before adding the sandwiches so the butter sizzles on contact and starts crisping the bread immediately.
  • If you're making more than two sandwiches, keep the finished ones warm in a low oven while you cook the rest so everyone eats at the same time.
